What is the Solids Control?

Solids control is a technique used in drilling rig to separate the solids in the drilling fluids that are crushed by the drill bits and carried out of the well surface. Normally solid control system is consist of five stages, including mud tank, shale shaker, vacuum degasser, desander, desilter, centrifuge. Shale shaker is used to separate the big solids with diameter above 75μm, and 45~74μm for desander, and 15~44μm for desilter. Sometimes desander & desilter are combined as high efficient mud cleaner. When air enters into the drilling fluids, vacuum degasser is used to separate the air. If no air in the mud, the degasser would work as a big agitator. All these equipments are mounted on the top of the mud tank. After separating the solids, the clean mud would be pumped into the borehole again.
Development history

Drilling fluid maintenance cost, clean up, and disposal cost as well as the overall cost of boring can be reduced dramatically when proper solids control techniques are utilized. These facts were recognized in the oil industry in the late 19th century when open earthen pits were used to separate the cuttings from the borehole. This was accomplished by a series of weirs and settling pits that allowed the solids to naturally settle out by using gravity. The clean mud then flowed into a suction pit to be re-pumped down the hole. This was the first solids control technique ever used.
The next innovation in solids control came when the shale shaker was introduced in the early 1930s for the oil industry. The shale shakers were derived from technology used in the mining industry. The shale shaker remains today the primary piece of solids control equipment utilized in the industry.
Another machine borrowed from the mining industry in the 1930s was the cone classifier or hydrocyclone. The basic principle of this device involves the centripetal forces brought about by the high velocity of the drilling fluid spinning in the cone, forcing the larger and heavier solids to settle outward toward the cyclone wall and downward toward the underflow solids discharge. Together with the shale shaker, hydrocyclones have become an integral part of today’s solid control system. In an addition to shakers and hydrocyclones, the use of a high-speed centrifuge has significantly contributed to the ability of a drilling operation to reduce the amount of mud to be built and diesel/barite additions to maintain optimum low and high gravity solids proportions.
Recent advances in solids control include the creation of a closed loop system which allows for increased environmental control and reduction in the potential for spills of drilling fluids. Several US states have either passed or are considering the implementation of closed loop systems, particularly for hydro-fracturing operations.

DRILLING FLUID SHEARING PUMP----WHAT IT IS?

A shearing pump is disperses, or transports, one phase or ingredient (liquid, solid, gas) into a main continuous phase (liquid), with which it would normally be immiscible. A rotor or impellor, together with a stationary component known as a stator, or an array of rotors and stators, is used either in a tank containing the solution to be mixed, or in a pipe through which the solution passes, to create shear. A shear pump can be used to create emulsions, suspensions, lyosols (gas dispersed in liquid), and granular products. It is used in the adhesives, chemical, cosmetic, food, pharmaceutical, and plastics industries for emulsification, homogenization, particle size reduction, and dispersion.[1]
PRINCIPLE OF WORK ABOUT DRILLING FLUID SHEARING PUMP

Fluid undergoes shear when one area of fluid travels with a different velocity relative to an adjacent area. A high-shear mixer uses a rotating impeller or high-speed rotor, or a series of such impellers or inline rotors, usually powered by an electric motor, to "work" the fluid, creating flow and shear. The tip velocity, or speed of the fluid at the outside diameter of the rotor, will be higher than the velocity at the centre of the rotor, and it is this velocity difference that creates shear.
A stationary component may be used in combination with the rotor, and is referred to as the stator. The stator creates a close-clearance gap between the rotor and itself and forms an extremely high-shear zone for the material as it exits the rotor. The rotor and stator combined together are often referred to as the mixing head, or generator.
Key design factors include the diameter of the rotor and its rotational speed, the distance between the rotor and the stator, the time in the mixer, and the number of generators in the series.  Variables include the number of rows of teeth, their angle, and the width of the openings between teeth.

TIPS FOR MIXING WITH DRILLING FLUID SHEARING PUMP

High shear mixers are high performance industrial manufacturing mixers, and as such, operate differently than conventional mixer/agitators. Here are some tips for mixing different types of ingredients with high shear mixers.

Using conventional agitators, it's difficult to avoid clumping when mixing gums and thickeners. To create an instant emulsion, make sure the dispersed phase is added just prior to the high shear in-line mixer. When mixing on a smaller (laboratory) scale, this is less critical. However, when larger volumes are being mixed, it's critical to get this right.

1.Batch high-shear mixer

In a batch high-shear mixer, the components to be mixed (whether immiscible liquids or powder in liquid) are fed from the top into a mixing tank containing the mixer on a rotating shaft at the bottom of the tank.  A batch high-shear mixer can process a given volume of material approximately twice as fast as an inline rotor–stator mixer of the same power rating; such mixers continue to be used where faster processing by volume is the major requirement, and space is not limited.  When mixing sticky solutions, some of the product may be left in the tank, necessitating cleaning.  However, there are designs of batch high-shear mixers that clean the tank as part of the operating run.

2.Inline high-shear mixer


In an inline high-shear rotor–stator mixer, the rotor–stator array is contained in a housing with an inlet at one end and an outlet at the other, and the rotor driven through a seal.  The components to be mixed are drawn through the generator array in a continuous stream, with the whole acting as a centrifugal pumping device.  Inline high-shear mixers offer a more controlled mixing environment, take up less space, and can be used as part of a continuous process.  Equilibrium mixing can be achieved by passing the product through the inline high-shear mixer more than once.






3.Ultra-high-shear inline mixers

In an ultra-high-shear inline mixer, the high-shear mixing takes place in a single or multiple passes through a rotor–stator array.  The mixer is designed to subject the product to higher shear and a larger number of shearing events than a standard inline rotor–stator mixer,  producing an exceptionally narrow particle-size distribution. Sub-micrometre particle sizes are possible using the ultra-high-shear technology.

We all know, poor boy degasser is also called mud gas separator or gas buster. One glossary ever described it as a simple separator vessel used to remove free or entrained gas from fluids circulated in the wellbore, such as mud used during drilling operations. The gas buster typically comprises a vessel containing a series of baffles with a liquid exit on the bottom and a gas-vent line at the top of the vessel.

Poor boy degasser for oil and gas drilling rig includes 600mm, 800mm, 1000mm, and 1200mm diameter.  The feed inlet usually is 5″, output discharge is 10″ or 8″, while the vent line will be 8″ diameter. But customizable dimension is available upon users’ demand.
The poor boy degasser feed inlet connected with choke manifold. The output line will be connected with shale shaker inlet line or flow divider. Vent line is connected to flare line.
 Regarding to the liquid leg, we usually design it as 12 ft line. As we said before, the mud seal will prevent drilling mud with remain toxic. Sufficient mud seal will lead good performance. Furthermore, there will be 4-5 baffles mounted on vessel wall.
Finally, is to design the support base. It can be fixed type or elevating/folding type. More and more clients prefer the folding base poor boy degasser for its flexibility and convenience at oil drilling job site.

The introduction of Mud Gun 
Mud gun, also called drilling mud gun, is the professional tool of oil drilling fluid solids control equipment, mainly for the mud system; The impetus of mud gun can come from either centrifugal pump or mud pump .

LET US TALK ABOUT THE DRILLING FLUID CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
Drilling fluid centrifugal pump is a sub-class of dynamic axisymmetric work-absorbing turbomachinery. [1 Centrifugal pumps are used to transport liquids/fluids by the conversion of the rotational kinetic energy to the hydro dynamics energy of the liquid flow. The rotational energy typically comes from an engine or electric motor or turbine. In the typical simple case, the fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is accelerated by the impeller, flowing radially outward into a diffuser or volute chamber (casing), from where it exits.
THE APPLICATION OF DRILLING FLUID CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
Common uses include water, sewage, petroleum and petrochemical pumping. The reverse function of the centrifugal pump is a water turbine converting potential energy of water pressure into mechanical rotational energy.
PRISINPLE OF OPERATION ABOUT DRILLING FLUID CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
The impeller of such a pump is magnetically coupled with the motor, across a separation wall which is resistant to the fluid pumped. The motor drives a rotor carrying one or several pairs of [[permanent magnet]]s and these drag around a second pair(s) of permanent magnets attached to the pump impeller.

Like most pumps, a centrifugal pump converts mechanical energy from a motor to energy of a moving fluid. A portion of the energy goes into kinetic energy of the fluid motion, and some into potential energy, represented by fluid pressure or by lifting the fluid, against gravity, to a higher altitude.
SOME TYPES OF DRILLING FLUID CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
Vertical centrifugal pumps

Vertical centrifugal pumps are also referred to as cantilever pumps. They utilize a unique shaft and bearing support configuration that allows the volute to hang in the sump while the bearings are outside of the sump.    A common application for this style of pump is in a [[parts washer]].



Froth pumps

In the mineral processing industry, or in the extraction of oilsand, froth is generated to separate the rich minerals or bitumen from the sand and clays. Froth contains air that tends to block conventional pumps and cause loss of prime. Over history, industry has developed different ways to deal with this problem. One approach consists of using vertical pumps with a tank. Another approach is to build special pumps with an impeller capable of breaking the air bubbles. In the pulp and paper industry holes are drilled in the impeller. Some pumps may feature a large eye, an inducer or recirculation of pressurized froth from the pump discharge back to the suction to break the bubbles.
Multistage centrifugal pump

A centrifugal pump containing two or more impellers is called a multistage centrifugal pump. The impellers may be mounted on the same shaft or on different shafts.


ABOUT THE PRIMING OF DRILLING FLUID CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
Most centrifugal pumps are not self-priming. In other words, the pump casing must be filled with liquid before the pump is started, or the pump will not be able to function. If the pump casing becomes filled with vapors or gases, the pump impeller becomes gas-bound and incapable of pumping. To ensure that a centrifugal pump remains primed and does not become gas-bound, most centrifugal pumps are located below the level of the source from which the pump is to take its suction.
