Agitator Designing & Manufacturing

Mud agitators are mounted on the top of each tank compartment, except for the setting pits which are used to settle the big solids in the drilling fluids. The agitator shaft & impellers are inserted into the drilling mud. The electric motors drive the gear shaft through the gear box (or called gear reducer), and the impellers which are mounted at the specific place of shaft would agitate the drilling mud. To obtain good performance, and suspend the drilled-solids thoroughly, when designing & manufacturing mud agitators, many other factors must also be considered, such as the depth of mud tank, shape of mud tank, density of drilling fluids, etc.

1.  Radial Flow Impeller & Axial Flow Impeller
Radial flow impeller is that the blades of impeller are vertically fixed on the shaft. When the impellers rotates, the drilling fluids would also flow radially. But the distance from the bottom of mud tank should be appropriate. When one single impeller is used, the mud tank is better not deeper than 6ft, otherwise the upper fluids would not be agitated thoroughly. If it is deeper than 6ft, two or more impellers should be mounted on the shaft.
Axial flow impeller is to fix the blades of impeller to the hub with an angle, normally 45° ~ 60°. When the impeller starts to rotate, the drilling fluid is pushed to the bottom of the mud tank because of the impeller angle , it then flows from the bottom to the wall of the tank. Against by the wall, the drilling fluids then flow along the wall to the upper of the drilling fluids. Meanwhile, as the bottom drilling mud flows away, the pressure also declines, which would force the upper mud flow from the center to the bottom. In this way, the level of drilling fluids should be high enough, to avoid any eddy on the surface of mud.

Two or more impellers should be fixed on a  hollow tube, and the distance of each impeller should be well designed. The shafts are all made of low-carbon steel, no matter it is solid bar, or hollow tube. For the same length shafts,  the strength of hollow tube is higher than solid bar, so it is possible for the hollow shaft to be longer. To avoid any side vibration, the end of shaft should be fixed by a stabilizer which is mounted or welded directly to the bottom of mud tank.
