Solids control is a technique used in drilling rig to separate the solids in the drilling fluids that are crushed by the drill bits and carried out of the well surface. Shale shaker is used to separate the big solids with diameter above 75μm, and 45~74μm for desander, and 15~44μm for desilter. Sometimes desander & desilter are combined as high efficient mud cleaner. When air enters into the drilling fluids, vacuum degasser is used to separate the air. If no air in the mud, the degasser would work as a big agitator. All these equipments are mounted on the top of the mud tank. After separating the solids, the clean mud would be pumped into the borehole again.

shale shaker is the first processing line of solids control system,also called as the first stage of solids control equipment. The drilling fluids should not flow into mud tanks before being processed by shaleshaker.It is absolutely necessary to check shale shaker to avoid or reduce screens damage caused by a large volume of high speed drilling fluids that contain mass of solids and cutting.Especially in night, the dim light make it tricky to ensure screen intact,therefore,finding out the damaged shale shaker screens and changing in time are big project that drillers need to handle.Besides, it is desirable to wash screens often to avoid mesh blocking caused by sand.
While there always be exception,certain drilling fluids can not be flow through shale shake directly when pumped out of wellhole, they need to be precipitated in recycle pool which requires preparation in advance including the control of drainage,pump standing and pipelines in place.And then, pumped the drilling fluids into all-in-one machine for purification.
The use of mud cleaner
The mud cleaner is combination of shale shaker screen,desander and desilter,it also called as three-in-one.Mud cleaner is installed downstream from shale shaker or vacuum degasser if gas was entrained in to process the drilling fluids treated by shale shaker.Mud cleaner is not only capable of removing fine solids particles but also is the final line of solids control system.Mud cleaner can be the reflector of shale shaker screens damage,because large particles that shale shaker failed to remove will be suddenly increased in mud cleaner screen.
The main factor that affect the performance of mud cleaner are drilling fluids viscosity,pump pressure,the damage of hydrocyclones and underflow.
