Shale shakers can conduct a solids removal above 75 microns

Drilling fluids are used to remove debris from well boreholes during drilling operations. These fluids are designed with colloidal particles to have properties that promote the removal of the sand sized particles but not to have excessive friction drag. Of course,in so doing,the fluid itself assumes this cuttings burden, and if the cuttings are not removed from the fluid,it very quickly loses its ability to clean the hole and create thick filter cakes. To enable on site recycling and reuse of the drilling fluid, cuttings must be continually efficiently removed.The drilling fluids are recycled by removal the sand particles while retaining the colloids.

The shale shaker screen is the first major solids control equipment in a series that is used to recondition the drilling fluids for recycle to the borehole. Shale shakers process drilling fluids and remove most of the large particles in solids control equipment project.

The proper functioning of a shale shaker is vital for other separation processes or solids control equipment to function effectively. This makes the shale shaker the “first line of defense’ in solids control system. The efficiency of operation of other solids control equipment depends heavily on the proper and effective functioning of shale shaker,thus unburdening other solids control equipment such as desanders,desilter,mud cleaners and decanter centrifuges. Hence,the drilling fluids also known as drilling mud coming out of the well is first fed onto drilling fluids shale shaker to remove the coarse particles from circulating drilling fluids. The shale shaker contain screens of mesh size appropriate for the size and type of solids they are required to remove. There are also reports of other equipment such as rotating separators that are used as an alternative to shale shaker when drilling with oil based drilling fluids.

Shale shakers can conduct a solids removal above 75 microns and usually combined with other solid control equipment. The second and third stage equipment are desanders that removes cuttings of 45-75 microns and desilters which do a separation between 15~45 microns. The desander and desliter can be work together to be served as a mud cleaner. Then, the last stage is decanter centrifuge which can remove the particles above 2 microns. After these steps, the drilling solids will be removed and the recycle and reuse of drilling mud can be achieved.
