Vertical Centrifugal Submersible Slurry Pump for
Drilling Mud
A slurry pump is a type of
water pump intended for use in situations where
solids are accidentally or intentionally suspended in water. As centrifugal
pumps, slurry pumps rotate water by way of
impeller. Depending on the specific application, rotation controls particulates
and prevents solids from entering and causing damage or corrosion to other
machinery parts. In other applications, a slurry pump is used to keep solids suspended by preventing any
settling or other separation of the solids from a liquid medium. Certain
compounds and other materials require suspension in water for safe transport,
utilizing a slurry pump
to keep compounds suspended through constant motion.
THE APPLICATION OF CENTRIFUGAL SUBMERSIBLE SLURRY
PUMP
Slurry
pumps are widely used to transport corrosive/abrasive and high concentration slurry in many industries such as
Gold, Silver, Iron ore, Tin, Steel, Coal, Titanium, Copper, Mineral sands, Lead
and Zinc. Various other industries include Molybdenum, Electric Utilities, Oil
Shale, Water & Sewage Utilities, Building areas, Sand & Gravel, Tobacco
and Agriculture (hog, poultry, dairy manure) and are grouped by:

THE COMPONENTS OF
CENTRIFUGAL SUBMERSIBLE SLURRY PUMP
Impeller: The impeller, either elastomer or
high-Chromium|chromematerial, is the main rotating component which normally has
vanes to impart the centrifugal force to the liquid.
Casing: Split outer casing
halves of cast contain the wear liners and provide high operation pressure
capabilities. The casing shape is generally of semi-volute or concentric,
efficiencies of which are less than that of the Volute type.
Shaft and Bearing
Assembly: A large diameter drive shaft with a short overhang minimizes
deflection and vibration. Heavy-duty [[roller bearing]] are housed in a
removable bearing cartridge.
Shaft sleeve: A hardened,
heavy-duty corrosion-resistant sleeve with O-ring seals at both ends protects
the shaft. A split fit allows the sleeve removed or installed quickly.
Shaft Seal: Expeller drive seal, Packing seal,
Mechanical seal.
HOW TO SELECT CENTRIFUGAL
SUBMERSIBLE SLURRY PUMP
It is important to know the steps for sizing slurry
pumps and the relationship between them, to ensure that these procedures are
correctly understood. The following only covers the basic parameters that must
be considered. A detailed procedure is available in our Slurry Pump
Guide.
Installed in a piping system a Slurry Pump must be rated against the static head, any delivery pressure requirement and all friction losses to be able to provide the required flow rate. The duty point is where the pump performance curve crosses the system curve.
When sizing a pump it is vitally important to never overestimate the system resistance as a multitude of problems can arise. Always use the best estimate of system head. Add safety margins to the calculated power only.
The performance of a centrifugal pump, pumping slurry differs from the performance with clean water depending on the amount of solid particles in the slurry. This difference depends on the characteristics of the slurry (particle size, density, and shape). This is described in our Slurry pump Guide. The factors that are affected are the power (P), head (H), and efficiency (h). The differences between slurry and water are shown schematically in the curves below.
A correctly dimensioned slurry pump must be capable of overcoming the losses caused by friction in the piping and any valves. It is also important that the flow velocity does not fall below the critical velocity otherwise sedimentation will result. It is important that all the parameters for the slurry and pipe system, are specified as accurately as possible. In cases when assumptions must be madein the calculations, it is important that the customer is made aware of them.(for more information contact us to receive a copy of our slurry pump guide)

A
slurry pump is a
type of water pump intended for use in situations
where solids are accidentally or intentionally suspended in water. As
centrifugal pumps, slurry pumps rotate water by
way of impeller. Depending on the specific application, rotation controls
particulates and prevents solids from entering and causing damage or corrosion to other
machinery parts. In other applications, a slurry pump is used to keep solids suspended by preventing any
settling or other separation of the solids from a liquid medium. Certain
compounds and other materials require suspension in water for safe transport,
utilizing a slurry pump
to keep compounds suspended through constant motion.
While
several slurry pump
designs appear in the marketplace, the basic operating principles remain the
same. The pump is housed in a high pressure
casing, typically in a semi-spiral shape. Inside the casing are various drive
devices that turn a shaft and bearing assembly. Impellers are located along the
shaft, with vanes to help create the centrifugal force needed to spin the slurry. Once the drive devices are engaged, bearings
keep the shaft turning smoothly and consistently, while the impeller swirls or
centrifuges the slurry.
To
illustrate the effects of a slurry pump, consider a mixture of sand and water in an
ordinary drinking glass. Swirl the glass at a high enough rate of speed and the
sand will remain suspended in the water. Centrifugal slurry
pumps operate on the same principle, although driven by belts, drives, and
other mechanical components to create the high pressure centrifuge needed
for large volumes of heavy slurry.
Using
a slurry pump is
common in certain industrial applications. For example, the mixture of water
and cement forms a type of slurry that must
remain in motion to prevent water evaporation and subsequent drying of the
cement into concrete. Cement
mixer trucks are a common example of a centrifugal slurry
pump used to transport a slurry
compound. Paper production is another application involving a slurry pump. Wood pulp
and water are mixed and centrifuged via a pump
during the production of various papers.
Different
applications naturally require different centrifugal pumps. Typically, a slurry pump is intended
for use as a submersible
pump, since applications most often require high pressure that is best
achieved when the impeller is placed in the slurry.
Slurry weight determines the type, design, and
capacity of slurry pump
needed. Such designs are easiest divided according to light, medium, or heavy slurry weight.
Light
slurry needs normally result from the accidental
or unwanted introduction of particulates, such as with hard water or other
solutions with less than five percent solids. The presence of large
particulates, heavy concentrations of particulates, or compounds needing
suspension for transport require medium or heavy slurry
pumps. Particulate size and concentration percentage determine if a medium or
heavy slurry pumps is required.
