Drilling Mud Degassing Unit Poor Boy Degasser

Poor Boy Degasser, also called mud gas separator, is an elementary degassing unit in treating the drilling mud used in oil & gas drilling. Poor boy degasser is located at first stage before shale shaker in the complete solids control system. Its main purpose is to ensure the operation safely in well drilling and smooth the whole process of solids control.

Why need Poor Boy Degasser
Drilling mud invading by the gas (methane, nature gas amd Carbon dioxide) from the circle space aroud the drilling rig will result in kick, even blowout while drilling operation because of the unbalance of air pressure. The function of the poor boy degasser is to separate the bubbles with the size ≥ 3mm.

How Poor Boy Degasser Works
There are mainly 4 opening(mud inlet, kicker port, mud outlet and sewage drain outlet) in the processing tan and all of them are connected by pipes. The gas cut in drilling mud is delivered by the feeding pump into the degasser tank along tangent route through the inlet pipe. After the collision of a series baffles specially designed and installed in the inner wall of the tank, the exposure of the mud surface is expanded and the mud flows down in a disturbed flow condition. Meanwhile,The mud and gas finished separation. Free gas is guided through the kicker port connected by pipes at the top of the tank to the safe place, then burned by the flare ignition device. Drilling mud after gas separation will flow into the treating tank for the further treatment by the subsequent equipements. Such as shale shaker, mud cleaner and decanter centrifuge etc. The sewage in the degasser tank flows from the drain outlet at the bottom of the tank.
