Methods to Remove Solids for Oil & Gas Drilling

As discussed previously that the drilled solids is evil & detrimental for the oil & gas drilling process. They may reduce the drilling rate & drilling footage, intensify the wear of drilling tools, thicken the mud cake, and damage the oil &  gas reservior. Drilled solids include the cuttings that are drilled from the earth by the drill bits, and also sloughs that drop from the wall of the borehole. Drilling fluids is classified as water based fluids, oil based ones, and also foam. While the solid phases in the drilling fluids, or sometimes  called drilling circulation medium, include useful solids & harmful solids. The useful solids is consist of clay, barite, and other additive agents, while the harmful solids include sludge & drilled solids. The size of clay & barite is less than 2μm, and smaller than the screen meshes, so they can not be removed, as they are used to maintain the property of drilling fluids, so they also should not be removed. The size of sludge is between 2 ~ 74μm. They are also smaller than the screen meshes, so they would also stay in the drilling fluids. After many times of circulation, the sludge may become even smaller as powders, and be harder to remove. While the drilled solids, as they are evil to the drilling process, must be separated and removed.
When the drilled solids content accumulate in the borehole, to maintain the property of drilling fluids, water may be added into the drilling fluids to dilute. Another way is chemical method,  using  flocculating agent to make solids flocculate to be removed easily. The method that is used widely is by solids control equipment, such as mud gas separator  Jet Mud Mixer    mud mixing pump   mud gun  screw pump    Shale Shaker Screen    shearing pump   Vertical Cutting Dryer, etc. This different stage of solids control equipment would be used to separate different size of solids. and also some other devices would also be used, such as mud agitator to avoid solids precipitating, sand pump, mud gun, etc.
