Solids & Liquid Limit on Shale Shaker

As we discussed in the last article that shale shaker's capacity is determined by the combination of solids limit & drilling-fluid liquid phase limit. This two limits are interrelated on the drilling fluids for the solids control system. When the amount of solids increase in the drilling fluids, the amount of fluids that can be processed would decrease. The screen cloth is considered as a permeable medium for the drilling fluids. Its capacity depends on the fluids permeability, screen conductance & its effective filtration area. The capacity would decrease as the fluids viscosity increases. We know the plastic viscosity of the fluids is important, but the yield & gel strength sometime also have an important impact as well.

Except these, there exists some other external factors that can effect the capacity of shale shaker.
1. Fluid Rheological Properties.
It shows that processing capacity of shale shaker screendecreases as the plastic viscosity (PV) of a drilling fluids increases. PV is the viscosity that the drilling fluid processes at an infinite shear rate. Drilling fluid viscosity is dependent on the shear rate applied to fluid. The shear rate through a shale shaker sreen depends on the screen opening size and fluid velocity relative to the shale shaker wires.
2. Wire Wettability.
When drilling with oil-based fluids, shale shaker screen must be oil wet. Because if water adheres to the screen wire, it would decreases the effective opening size of the screen for oil to pass through.
3. Fluid Density.
In drilling processing, weighting agent would be added into the drilling fluids, which increase the solids amount in the fluid and make it diffult to for the screen to process.
4. Solids Quantity, Type, Size & Shape.
Particle size has a significant effect on the solids & liquid capacity of the shale shaker.
5. Hole Cleaning.
Another factor for shale shaker performance is the carrying capacity of drilling fluids. If cuttings can not be carryed to the surface of the well in a timely manner, it may be disintegrated into small solids in the borehole. If they stay in the borehole for a long time, the PV & solids content of drilling fluids would be increase. When cuttings are disintegrated into small particles that shale shakercan not remove them, it would appears that shale shaker do not work adequately.
