Working Principle of Shale Shaker

As we have discussed previously that shaker screens are used on sshale shaker  desander  desilter  decanter centrifuge  centrifuge centrifugal pump   mud cleaner   vacuum degasser   Hydrocyclone cone    mud agitator to separate the cuttings in the drilling mud. But do you know how the cuttings move on the shaker screen to be removed out of the mud tank?

OGEM Shale Shaker

The shaker screen is equiped on the basket of shale shaker, with three or four pieces screen panels, while the screen basket is drived by two sets of vibration motors which are mounted on the top of shale shaker with synchronization and contra retation. There exists one piece of eccentric block in the vibration motor. When motor works, the eccentric block also retate. As there are two sets of vibration motors working synchronized, at some point, the vibration force that generated by the eccentric blocks is sum of these two blocks effect force. While at some point, the vibration force of motors would be zero.

Please refer to the below sketch, as the motors is synchronized and contra retating, when the eccentricity of these two blocks are different, the centrifugal force of eccentric block F1 ＞F2. At point 1 & 3, the effect force on the screen basket is F1-F2, and at point 2 & 4, it is F1+F2. Thus, the moving track of screen basket is ellipse, and the cuttings on the shaker screen would be moved on a ellipse way.

Ellipse Shale Shaker Working Principle

When the eccentricity of these two blocks are the same, at point 1 & 3, as the direction of the effection is opposite, the force is 0, while at point 2 & 4, the direction of the effection is same, so it is F1+F2. so in this way, the movig track of screen basket is linear motion.

Linear Motion Shale Shaker Working Principle

When there exist only one vibration motor on the shale shaker, the vibration force at any point of the moving track would be the same, so the screen basket would move in a round motion.

That is why shale shakers are divided into ellipse shale shaker, and linear motion shale shaker according to the working principle.
