As we mentioned that to maintain the viscosity & density of drilling fluids, some drilling fluids agents must be added into the fluids in the process of drilling mud circulation by the mud mixer. In the oilfield site, it is must according to the hydraulic head & flow speed requirement to choose the allocated pump & electrical motor for the mud mixer. If the drilling fluids circulation system requires fluids flowing at 1200 gal/min., it must choose 1200 gal/min. mud hopper for the system. Normally the mud hopper at 600~800 gal/min. is enough.

Normally the fluids agents packages are heavy, so on the mud mixerthere exists working platform for the worker to place the package and add the agents into the hopper easily. And the platform normally is 0.9~1.1 meter to easily handle the agent packages.
In drilling fluids solids control system, the mud hoppers are normally mounted at the horizontal level, while the Venturi construction allows the down stream pipeline  to lead the liquid to some higher point. That is why the Venturi construction are designed in the mud mixer.  Sometimes to push the liquid to higher mud tankor compartment, proper mud hopper must be designed. When using 20~13 1/8" mud hopper, the difference of barite adding rate are not big, when it is smaller then 13 1/8", the adding rate would reduce 17 %.

The pipe between the hopper & jet must be as short & straight as possible. There also exists a valve between the hopper & jet. When the valve is closed, the pressure in lower stream pipe would be lower then the upper one, so the fluids would flow automatically.
