Shale shaker is used to separate the big solids with diameter above 75μm, and 45~74μm for desander, and 15~44μm for desilter. Sometimes desander & desilter are combined as high efficient mud cleaner. When air enters into the drilling fluids, vacuum degasser is used to separate the air. If no air in the mud, the degasser would work as a big agitator. All these equipments are mounted on the top of the mud tank. After separating the solids, the clean mud would be pumped into the borehole again.

The function of drilling fluids shale shaker
shale shaker is the first processing line of solids control system,also called as the first stage of solids control equipment. The drilling fluids should not flow into mud tanks before being processed by shaleshaker.It is absolutely necessary to check shale shaker to avoid or reduce screens damage caused by a large volume of high speed drilling fluids that contain mass of solids and cutting.Especially in night, the dim light make it tricky to ensure screen intact,therefore,finding out the damaged shale shaker screens and changing in time are big project that drillers need to handle.Besides, it is desirable to wash screens often to avoid mesh blocking caused by sand.
While there always be exception,certain drilling fluids can not be flow through shale shake directly when pumped out of wellhole, they need to be precipitated in recycle pool which requires preparation in advance including the control of drainage,pump standing and pipelines in place.And then, pumped the drilling fluids into all-in-one machine for purification.
The use of mud cleaner
The mud cleaner is combination of shale shaker screen,desander and desilter,it also called as three-in-one.Mud cleaner is installed downstream from shale shaker or vacuum degasser if gas was entrained in to process the drilling fluids treated by shale shaker.Mud cleaner is not only capable of removing fine solids particles but also is the final line of solids control system.Mud cleaner can be the reflector of shale shaker screens damage,because large particles that shale shaker failed to remove will be suddenly increased in mud cleaner screen.
The main factor that affect the performance of mud cleaner are drilling fluids viscosity,pump pressure,the damage of hydrocyclones and underflow.

How is 4K oil drilling fluid system designed?

Oil drilling or gas well drilling include many depth. Such as 1000m, 2000m, 3000m, 4000m, 5000m, 7000m, 9000m, even 12000m. The depth depends on certain geology and earth property. We usually use “K” stands for 1000m. Then we can find there are 1K oil rig, 4K rig, or 7K oil well, etc.

4K oil drilling fluid system design

The main configuration of 4K oil drilling fluid system include mud tanks, shale shaker, hydrocyclone separators or the mud cleaner assembly, jet mixing unit, shearing pump, feeding pump. Listed are necessary parts for whole fluid system. Then optional equipments including middle speed decanter centrifuge, and vacuum degasser.

Solids control system

Detail configuration on mud equipment and system:

Basic item is mud tank. The mud tanks have totally at least 260m3 capacity. The processing tanks volume should be not less than 180m3, while storage tank is 80m3 at least. Then, the first phase solids control equipment shale shaker.

OGEM adopted linear motion shaker. Its treating capacity is over 180m3/h(792GPM). In this system, we set 2 shakers totally treat 1584GPM drilling mud. We also can design them as dual tandem shaker.

Vacuum degasser is usually configured after shaker. We kindly suggest user select one vacuum degasser holding 180m3/h drilling fluid flow rate. This can help us separate a little invaded gas out of degasser. Keep our job site safe. This vacuum degasser doesn’t request centrifugal feeding pump. It’s compact and easy to operate.

Subsequent equipments can be separated hydrocyclone separator or assembly mud cleaner. Anyhow, the treating capacity is not lower than 180m3/h. Under this configuration, we can get efficient drilling fluid purification and excellent performance. If required by clients, decanting centrifuge will be set after hydrocyclone desilter or mud cleaner.

Centrifuge pump will transfer drilling fluid from desilter room to centrifuge. It’s middle speed centrifuge with 176GPM capacity get rid of 5~7microns solid. Drilling fluid after processed by decanter centrifuge, will be clean mud can be used again.

When it come to clean mud room or storage tank, we’ll operate jet mixing unit to mix drilling fluid evenly. Furthermore, mud hopper pump can weight drilling fluid balance property.

The shearing pump, is another centrifugal pump to shear drilling mud with large block. It’s another kind of drilling fluid mixture. Ensure good mud property and drilling fluid flow smoothly. The construction is over head belt style.

Actually, the feeding pump, or mud cleaner transfer pump are all horizontal centrifugal pumps. All pumps including transfer pump, trip pump, etc. These pumps should be suitable to whole system capacity. Not less than 180m3/h or even 200m3/h

Mud column pressure must exceed formation pressure, in this condition mud filtrate invades the formation, and a filter cake of mud is deposited on the wellbore wall.

Mud is designed to deposit thin, low permeability filter cake to limit the invasion.

Problems occur if a thick filter cake is formed; tight hole conditions, poor log quality, stuck pipe, lost circulation and formation damage.

In highly permeable formations with large bore throats, whole mud may invade the formation, depending on mud solids size;

Use bridging agents to block large opening, then mud solids can form seal.

For effectiveness, bridging agents must be over the half size of pore spaces / fractures.

Bridging agents (e.g. calcium carbonate, ground cellulose).

Depending on the mud system in use, a number of additives can improve the filter cake (e.g. bentonite, natural & synthetic polymer, asphalt and gilsonite).
